Our buying verdict

The 320iL kit is worth shortlisting for routine grass trimming when you want a documented battery-and-charger package and its direction controls suit your workflow. Its 16-inch swath, brushless motor and manually reloadable head are useful features. It is not a substitute for a blade-equipped brush cutter or proof of a specific runtime.

Reasons to shortlist it

  • Current US kit lists a 4Ah battery and charger
  • Direction selection can help manage the working pattern
  • Boost mode provides an additional control option
  • Rapid Replace head has a documented manual-loading procedure

Tradeoffs to consider

  • Direction changes do not eliminate thrown-debris hazards
  • Rapid Replace is not powered automatic line winding
  • Manual specifies 0.080-inch line; do not assume broader fit
  • Not documented here as a universal attachment power head

The kind of yard where the 320iL makes sense

This is most appealing to a homeowner maintaining grass around lawn edges, obstacles and planting areas who wants a complete cordless starting package. A 16-inch swath is a meaningful cutting-width specification, but the real fit depends on how much open trimming you do and how often you need to work close to objects. It is not a lawnmower replacement.

The direction controls are a reason to investigate the model if the route around your property makes debris management awkward. They can change the working pattern, but cannot guarantee that every clipping or stone travels harmlessly away. Inspect the area first, preserve the guard and maintain the clearances required by the manual.

We would prioritize comfortable control and the battery package over the Weed Eater name or a marketing voltage. If your work mostly involves rough woody vegetation, choose equipment explicitly suited to that material. If it is a very small amount of weekly grass trimming, compare simpler tools before deciding a full kit is necessary.

Three controls that should not be confused

Use extra output when appropriate; no runtime guarantee.

What the direction and Boost controls actually mean

Husqvarna documents a control for changing cutting-head rotation and a Boost mode for additional output. These are operating features, not independent test results. The 320iL operator manual ↗ explains their behavior and the proper operating sequence.

Think of direction selection as one part of planning the pass. Your stance, guard position, nearby surfaces and objects in the grass also influence debris. Do not aim thrown material toward people, animals, vehicles or windows. A reversible head cannot make a hazardous area safe without inspection and appropriate clearance.

Boost is not a promise that the trimmer will clear every tough patch or run for a fixed amount of time. Higher demand changes battery use, and actual vegetation matters. We have not measured the difference between standard and Boost operation. The review therefore avoids assigning invented power scores, cut-time savings or acreage claims.

Confirm the US kit and battery identity

The checked US battery-and-charger configuration is article 970 48 01-04. The manufacturer lists a 40-B140 battery with 36V, 4Ah and 144Wh specifications, plus the 40-C80 charger. Confirm those components on the actual selected offer, especially when a retailer shows several tool-only and kit choices on one page.

Husqvarna’s MAX Battery Series branding should not be read as permission to use another brand’s battery with a similar number on the label. Match approved battery and charger models to the tool documentation. A cross-platform adapter can introduce risks and is not part of the documented package we reviewed.

If you also maintain a hedge, compare the related 320iHD60 Hedge Master review. Sharing an approved battery family can simplify charging, while buying two complete kits can duplicate chargers and packs. Decide based on the exact offers and how much simultaneous work you plan to do; we do not assume one purchasing route always costs less.

Compare the exact offer

Match the model, selected kit, condition and seller. Check the current delivered price and return terms before ordering.

Rapid Replace and the correct line size

The Rapid Replace head uses a manual align, feed and twist loading process. That can be more convenient than dismantling a head, but it is not powered automatic winding. Read the loading procedure carefully, use the specified line length and remove the battery before handling the cutting head.

The operator manual specifies 2.0 mm, or 0.080-inch, trimmer line. Some retailer and generic head descriptions discuss other diameters, but we would follow the model’s approved configuration rather than infer permission from a broad product-family description. Do not install metal wire, blades or unapproved cutting accessories.

Line feed and line loading are different operations. The manual describes feeding by bumping the head while operating as instructed; loading a fresh length is a separate maintenance task. If powered winding is your top priority, compare the EGO ST1623T review instead of assuming Rapid Replace offers the same function. A clear distinction helps avoid paying for a feature you expected but did not actually buy.

A ready-to-trim package still needs a setup check

Balance, maintenance and sensible limitations

The manufacturer lists 7.41 pounds excluding the battery, but that does not tell you how the complete kit will feel. The battery, handle adjustment and stance are all part of working balance. If possible, try the assembled tool with the intended pack and assess trigger reach, visibility and relaxed two-handed control.

Follow the manual for assembly, inspection and maintenance. A shaft coupling used during setup does not establish compatibility with arbitrary split-shaft accessories. We have not found documentation making this model a universal attachment power head; do not buy extra attachments based on appearance alone.

The operator manual restricts the intended cutting task to soft vegetation and specifies safety measures including bystander clearance, protection from unsuitable wet conditions and battery removal before maintenance. Use the current instructions for your exact unit. Brushless construction reduces one type of motor maintenance, but wrapped vegetation, worn line and damaged guards still need attention.

Alternatives and the final buying checklist

The Milwaukee 2825-21ST is the more directly modular proposition if compatible QUIK-LOK attachments are part of your plan. The DEWALT DCST980X2 offers a wider documented swath and a different battery bundle. Compare complete packages rather than treating all brushless trimmers as equivalent.

Existing battery ownership may outweigh a small difference in published width. So may the head-loading routine or loaded comfort. The string-trimmer hub links additional models, and the review library gives a broader starting point. None of our source-backed reviews claims a hands-on winner without a test.

Before buying, confirm the article number and included components, check approved replacement line, try the assembled balance and assess service access. We would choose the 320iL when that full package fits routine grass work and the controls offer a practical benefit. We would pass if you need a documented attachment system, powered winding or a different tool for woody material.

8 frequently asked questions

What comes with the reviewed 320iL kit?

The checked US article 970 48 01-04 lists a 40-B140 4Ah/144Wh battery and 40-C80 charger. Verify the selected package; tool-only and regional versions can differ.

What line size should I use?

The model operator manual specifies 2.0 mm / 0.080-inch trimmer line. Follow that approved setup rather than generic retailer head descriptions.

Is Rapid Replace powered automatic winding?

No. The documented loading procedure is manual: align the head, feed the correct line and twist as instructed. Remove the battery first.

Does direction change make debris harmless?

No. It changes rotation and can help plan the work, but inspection, the guard and required bystander clearance are still essential.

What is the cutting width?

16 inches according to Husqvarna. That is the nominal swath, not a measured productivity result.

Will Boost mode reduce runtime?

Runtime depends on demand and conditions; higher output can use more energy. We have not measured a precise standard-versus-Boost difference.

Can I use metal blades or another brand’s attachments?

Do not assume either is approved. The manual calls for the documented nonmetallic line setup, and we have not verified universal attachment compatibility for this model.

Does the listed weight include the battery?

No. The checked manufacturer figure is battery-excluded. Try the complete working configuration rather than using that figure as a loaded-weight promise.

Should you buy it?

Choose the 320iL for a documented starter kit and grass-trimming controls that fit your route. Confirm the exact package and approved line, and distinguish manual easy loading from automatic winding. Its strongest case is practical routine use, not unsupported runtime or brush-clearing promises.
