EGO vs. Greenworks Snow Shovel: Which 12-Inch Kit Is the Better Buy?

Go Electric buying guide · Checked November 4, 2026

The EGO SNS1201 and Greenworks SS40L412 are both 12-inch cordless snow-shovel kits. The smarter buy depends on your existing batteries, storage space and what you are actually clearing.

Our recommendation: Start with Greenworks if you want the lower-cost complete setup for small paved areas. Choose EGO if folding storage, a longer tool warranty or your existing EGO battery collection makes the premium worthwhile. Neither is our recommendation for replacing a full-size snow blower on a large driveway.

Research-based editorial ratings

Audience: regular clearing of small paved walks and patios. Scores run from 0–10 in 0.5 steps. The overall is the equally weighted mean of all 6 categories, rounded to 1 decimal. These are editorial judgments, not laboratory or customer ratings. Missing evidence stays unrated.

Why these ratings?

Capability & job fit: Published 12-inch width and 6-inch depth fit narrow paved routes. That earns a strong job-fit score; repeated passes and limited width restrict larger jobs. This assesses specified suitability, not measured clearing speed or wet-snow performance.

Ease of use: The adjustable front handle and trigger controls support straightforward operation, but the 16.7 lb battery-equipped tool still requires two-handed handling. A solid usability score with a meaningful weight trade-off; comfort and fatigue have not been tested.

Features & controls: Two speed settings and 60-degree directional control provide useful ways to manage discharge. Strong controls for this class, though the limited aiming range still requires route planning. The score does not assume the advertised maximum throw is achieved in every condition.

Battery & kit options: The kit supplies a 2.5Ah battery and charger; a separate bare-tool version and compatibility with the listed EGO packs offer flexibility. Strong package choices, with runtime and handling dependent on battery and conditions. Larger packs are not an automatic ergonomic upgrade.

Storage & portability: A hinged shaft is a practical storage advantage. Portability receives a lower assessment than storage because carrying a 16.7 lb complete tool is still work. Strong overall convenience, without claiming exceptionally light handling or measured folded dimensions.

Value for the right buyer: For a regular small-area user buying a complete kit, the $299 EGO offer is $59.01 above the $239.99 Greenworks SS40L412 kit. Folding storage and a 5-year tool warranty versus 3 years help justify the premium; Greenworks includes an LED light and costs less. Both list 3-year battery coverage. This is strong value, not the cheapest option. Prices checked November 4, 2026; taxes and delivery vary.

Why these ratings?

Capability & job fit: The 12-inch width suits narrow paved routes. The advertised 8-inch depth is a specification, not proof of faster clearing or better wet-snow performance. The narrow pass still limits larger jobs.

Ease of use: The adjustable auxiliary handle, trigger with lockout and two speed settings support straightforward control. Operation still requires two hands and repeated narrow clearing passes, so this is a solid 7 rather than an effortless-use rating. This is a design-based assessment: battery-equipped weight, comfort and fatigue have not been verified.

Features & controls: Two speeds, directional vanes and an LED light are useful controls for small routes. Aiming remains limited; published throw distance is not a measured result.

Battery & kit options: A 4.0Ah battery and charger make this a complete 40V setup. We verified this kit, but not an exact matching bare-tool Amazon offer. Battery capacity alone does not establish runtime.

Storage & portability: The narrow 12-inch clearing head and removable battery are practical for a small-area tool, but the listed 66.14 × 14.49 × 12.52-inch product dimensions and non-folding handle make storage and transport less convenient than EGO’s hinged design. That supports a 7 for the documented form factor. The dealer-listed 14.85 lb does not specify battery inclusion; this score does not assume lighter carrying weight or tested carrying comfort.

Value for the right buyer: At $239.99, this complete kit costs $59.01 less than the $299 EGO kit, while retaining directional control and adding a headlight. Strong value for a new small-area user; its 3-year tool warranty is shorter and it lacks EGO’s folding shaft. This is an editorial price-and-features judgment, not a performance winner.

Greenworks ratings completed November 4, 2026 using the documented controls, handle design and product dimensions. The 7.8 overall is the mean of all 6 scores. Ease of use and storage/portability are design-based judgments, not hands-on comfort tests; uncertainty itself is not a score deduction. Battery-equipped weight remains unconfirmed—see the size and weight details. The small overall-score difference is not evidence that either model clears snow better.

Greenworks size, weight and storage

Product dimensions: 66.14 × 14.49 × 12.52 inches. The exact SS40L412 Amazon listing gives these as D × W × H. They are not labeled as folded or stored dimensions.

Listed weight: 14.85 lb — battery inclusion unconfirmed. Joseph’s Lawnmowers lists this weight for the SS40L412, but does not identify whether the battery is included. We therefore do not compare it directly with EGO’s 16.7 lb battery-equipped figure or claim that Greenworks is lighter.

Folding handle: no. That is the specification on Greenworks’ US product page. Plan storage around the full product dimensions rather than assuming EGO-style folding convenience.

Additional specifications checked November 4, 2026. We have not substituted weights from other Greenworks snow-shovel models or battery kits.

Price: compare complete setups

Amazon showed the EGO SNS1201 kit at $299.00 and the Greenworks SS40L412 kit at $239.99 when checked on November 4, 2026. That puts Greenworks $59.01 lower before tax. Both listings were orderable; Greenworks showed in stock, while EGO displayed a later delivery window. Check availability for your address.

Which one makes more sense for you?

Choose EGO when…

  • You already own compatible EGO batteries.
  • A folding shaft would help in your garage or shed.
  • You value longer stated tool-warranty coverage.

Choose Greenworks when…

  • You are starting from scratch and want the lower kit price.
  • You already use the compatible Greenworks 40V platform.
  • An LED light matters for early or late clearing.

For an occasional small walkway, the Greenworks price advantage is difficult to ignore. For regular use, storage convenience and battery ownership can easily matter more than a modest purchase-price gap. Think about where you will keep the shovel and how often you will carry it to the work area.

Do not treat “56V” versus “40V,” or “2.5Ah” versus “4.0Ah,” as a shortcut to a winner. Those labels alone do not tell us which shovel clears snow faster or runs longer under the same conditions. We do not have comparable runtime or wet-snow test data.

What the specifications cannot tell you

The Greenworks 8-inch depth listing is a difference on paper, but it does not establish that it handles dense snow better. The same caution applies to the matching 25-foot throw claims. Snow condition, loading and wind change the practical result.

Both tools require room to discharge snow. Before choosing either one, picture the route from your door to the driveway: where will the snow land, and will you have to move it again? A narrow path beside parked cars or a doorway can make discharge control more important than a headline distance.

For broad driveways, repeated deep storms or the packed ridge left by a plow, consider a larger snow blower. For lifting and carrying, we can verify EGO’s equipped weight, but cannot responsibly call Greenworks lighter without a matched weight measurement.

Already own EGO batteries? Check the bare tool too

The SNS1201 is the complete kit. The SNS1200 is the standalone tool without battery or charger; it does not require a separate multi-head power head. Amazon showed the SNS1200 at $279 during our check, just $20 below the $299 kit. At that gap, an extra battery and charger may make the kit worthwhile even for an existing owner. Our verdict

Greenworks is our starting recommendation for a new buyer prioritizing complete-kit cost. EGO is the more compelling choice when its folding shaft, longer tool warranty or battery compatibility solves a specific need. We would not pay extra purely for a larger voltage number, and we would not promise better snow performance from a depth specification.

Common questions

Are both snow shovels available on Amazon?

Both exact kits had active, orderable Amazon listings during our November 4 check. Delivery timing differed. The buttons above go directly to the matched listings, rather than a generic search.

Can the brands share batteries?

No. Shop for the manufacturer-approved battery platform for the specific tool. A Greenworks 40V battery is not an EGO 56V battery.

Which is best for heavy, wet snow?

We cannot name a winner without comparable testing. If heavy or packed snow is your normal workload, reconsider whether either compact shovel is the right equipment class.
