Hedge trimming guides
Choose a hedge trimmer that fits your hedges
Start with the height and depth of your hedges, the growth you trim and the room you have to work. Then choose corded, cordless or pole reach.
What does your hedge need?
Reachable hedges near an outlet
A corded handheld trimmer can suit regular shaping without a battery charging routine.
Freedom to move around the yard
Compare the complete working weight and battery kit. Existing compatible batteries can help narrow the options.
Extra reach for taller hedges
A pole and pivoting head address a different job from a handheld tool. Check the physical reach and balance, not just the advertised figure.
Still choosing a power source? Think about outlet access, the route around the hedge and the weight you can control comfortably.
Three different tools to compare
These illustrate corded convenience, an existing battery platform and extra reach. Each review explains its limitations.
Corded handheld
BLACK+DECKER BEHT350FF
The BLACK+DECKER BEHT350FF is a corded option for hedges within practical outlet reach.
Manage the extension cord and confirm the manual’s cutting limits.
Existing Makita LXT batteries
Makita XHU02Z
The Makita XHU02Z is a handheld option for reachable hedge faces and routine shaping.
The Z package is tool only; battery and charger are separate.

Before you buy
Separate blade length from cutting capacity. A longer blade covers more hedge; it does not automatically cut thicker stems.
Check access and working position. Hedge height and depth decide whether a handheld or pole design is practical.
Compare the complete package. A bare tool and a kit with batteries and a charger are different purchases.
Read model-specific notices. The EGO HT2411 review includes an older-unit recall and date-code check. Review that notice before considering a used or old-stock unit.
Common questions
Is a longer blade always easier to use?
No. A longer blade can cover a broad hedge face, while a shorter or lighter tool may be easier around detailed shapes. Compare reach, working weight and the space around the hedge.
Should I buy a pole hedge trimmer?
Consider a pole design when its reach and head angle solve a real access problem. For low, reachable hedges, a handheld tool can be simpler to control. The WORX WG252 review explains the tradeoffs.
Can a hedge trimmer replace loppers or a pruning saw?
Use it only within the growth and branch limits in the exact manual. Thick or woody stems may need an appropriate pruning tool instead of forcing a hedge trimmer through them.
Where should I start if I do not own batteries?
Compare complete battery-and-charger kits with corded alternatives. A low bare-tool price can change substantially once the missing battery and charger are included.
